Health Problems Related to Not Getting Enough Sleep

Most teenagers nowadays think it’s cool to sleep way past 3 am, even though there’s nothing for them to do. This routine is slowly killing their metabolism and disrupting their hormones, which is why they sound more agitated and aggressive. 

Missing sleep doesn’t just make you tired; it causes some scary health issues. Let’s discuss the health problems that arise due to a poor sleep cycle, so you can start sleeping at the right time. 

  • Weakened Immune System

At night (when we sleep), our body produces cells that fight against infections. These protective agents, known as antibodies, are essential for keeping harmful bacteria and viruses out of your system. 

But when your sleep-wake cycle is severely disrupted, the body doesn’t form these cells, leading to frequent sick days. 

Even one bad night can hinder your body’s ability to keep infections and other health issues at bay. 

  • Respiratory Disorders

Your lack of sleep can also be due to any underlying condition, like sleep apnea. What you were ignoring, saying that it’s just a poor sleeping schedule, was, in reality, a sleep disorder, silently disrupting your body’s mechanisms. 

This specific condition causes you to stop breathing suddenly at night, and you wake up with a loud gasp. If you’ve been struggling with sleep apnea too, thinking that it’s normal, you should consider a sleep apnea surgery recommended by a somnologist (sleep doctor). 

  • Heart Diseases

Like your muscles and definitely your brain, the heart needs rest too after a whole day of working. When we sleep, our heart rate drops significantly. This means the heart doesn’t have to work as hard now to pump blood, thus it gets the much-needed break.   

If your sleep patterns are severely disrupted, it could lead to hypertension, arrhythmias, stroke, and eventually a sudden heart attack. Even if you are healthier than everybody and go to the gym 6 days a week, sleep deprivation can cause irreversible damage. 

  • Type-2 Diabetes Risk

When we don’t sleep well, our body becomes less effective at using insulin. First, the body increases the sugar level in our blood. In normal cases, the insulin identifies that and brings it down to a normal level. 

However, in sleep-deprived individuals, Insulin resistance rises significantly. It means no regulation, thus causing type 2 diabetes.  According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 6.3% of the world’s population struggles with type 2 diabetes. 

  • Poor Skin Health and Early Aging

Have you ever noticed that your skin looks dull and dry if you haven’t had the right amount of sleep? These slight changes become significant over time and lead to early aging. 

You wouldn’t want that, right? Lack of sleep can lead to increased wrinkles, dark circles, and puffiness.  It also slows down the cell repair process, and you’ll see more breakouts than ever. In simple terms, a disrupted and irregular sleep schedule equals poor skin health.

Sleep isn’t something you can simply skip whenever you want. When we sleep, our body repairs itself, and our organs, especially the heart, slow down to recover for the next morning. 

Establish a consistent sleeping schedule that accommodates your job or business schedule. If that doesn’t help, consult a healthcare professional to see if there’s any hidden condition you didn’t know about.
